Oysters have been gaining in popularity in recent years, due to the establishment of fancy “gastro bars” which serve them paired with exquisite champagnes. For the majority of us, though, oysters remain a largely inaccessible delicacy, pricey and decadent and reserved only for the occasional indulgence. Now, the folks here at Crab Towkay intend to change that! With our affordable live oyster delivery service, everyone can enjoy oysters at home on any occasion. Why should we eat oysters though? Here are some good reasons to include them in your diet:

Reason to eat oysters 1: Oysters contain a wealth of nutritional value!

Not only do these little sea nuggets taste clean and fresh, their nutritional content is a godsend to those who love healthy snacks! Oysters are high in vitamins A, E, C and B12, and contain high amounts of zinc as well. What does this mean? Well, all of those vitamins and minerals, especially zinc, are essential for maintaining energy levels and a strong immune system. Oysters are also high in iron, which is important for a healthy circulatory system. Eating oysters is probably good advice for ladies who every now and then need to replenish this vital nutrient!

Oysters are more than just body-boosters, they also lack any of the nasty stuff you might associate with indulging in seafood. They are low in calories, low in fat, and contain high amounts of protein. Swap out that post-workout shake for a platter of freshly-shucked oysters today.

Of course, everyone knows that to maintain a healthy lifestyle, simply eating healthy is not enough. We need to get our daily dose of exercise and strenuous activity. This brings us to the next benefit of eating oysters:

Reason to eat oysters 2: Oysters are an aphrodisiac!

It is said that the legendary Venetian womaniser Giacomo Casanova ate 50 oysters every morning to maintain optimal performance under the sheets. Myths like these have been told and retold countless times, and have contributed to the notorious reputation of the humble oyster as nature’s pre-eminent male enhancement product. In more recent years this capability has been put to the test, with varying results from “BS!” to “maybe!”.

In 2005, a team of American and Italian researchers analysed various bivalve molluscs (oysters, mussels, etc) and found that “they were rich in rare amino acids that trigger increased levels of sex hormones.” In fact, the researchers found that “injecting the amino acids into rats triggered a chain reaction of hormones that ended with the production of testosterone in males and progesterone in females.”

Other studies have shown that oysters contain the amino acids tyrosine and phenylalanine, which help promote the levels of dopamine (happy chemicals!) in your brain. Hey, even if you don’t necessarily feel the heat turned up in the bedroom tonight, you’ll at least feel happier and healthier after having some oysters!

Scam or superfood? You will only know if you try… Perhaps a weekly oyster night just might be the key to saving your marriage! Contact Crab Towkay for our special marriage-therapy oyster subscription service.

Reason to eat oysters 3: Recycle!

Do you have a green thumb? Maybe you keep a beautiful garden at home, or perhaps you spend a few minutes each day cultivating plants at the balcony. Either way, your weekly dish of oysters might be the key to blooming flowers and a bountiful harvest of beansprouts! No, we’re not talking about feeding the sweet oyster flesh to your plants, we’re talking about the lowly oyster shell. Did you know that the oyster shell has a myriad of uses in the garden? As a fertiliser, the calcium carbonate composition of the shell helps to balance the acidity of the soil, loosen it, and improve drainage. As a landscaping tool, using crushed oyster shells to pave the ground helps deter leaf-eating slugs (who dislike slithering across the rough surface). Adopt a truly organic and chemical-free garden today!

Reason to eat oysters 4: They are perfect for parties

If anything, having an ice-cold platter of fresh oysters is a sure way to impress your guests when they come over. Why lay out the same old repertoire of snacks and finger food that are either too troublesome (deep-fried items, sandwiches) or too unhealthy (potato chips) when you can have this classy delight delivered to you ready to eat? All you have to do is bring out the Tabasco sauce, slice up some lemons, and your guests will slurp their way into remembering you as the greatest party host ever. Let’s not even get started on the fantastic pairing that oysters make with spirits like wine and champagne. Some uncle-types might even swear by it’s compatibility with beer. Either way, you’ve got a party that’s delicious, healthy, and has aphrodisiac qualities. What more can you ask for? 🙂
